I love using highlighters for color coding but since I’m a bit of a perfectionist I held off using them for a long time. It takes a lot more whiteout to cover up highlighter then pen if you’ve accidentally used the wrong color.
If you’re also a perfectionist then erasable highlighters are more expensive than the standard non-erasable ones but they’ll keep your planner super neat!

Favorite erasable highlighters for planning and bullet journaling
Frixion Erasable
They come in pastel and bold colors (the pastel ones come in light pink, yellow and light blue), the bold colors come in pink, orange, yellow, green, purple and blue.
I don’t recommend the pastel ones. The colors are so washed out they’re hard to see and the ink gets even lighter over time as the ink dries out.

Typo Erasable
I recently purchased these and really like them! They’re a normal highlighter on one end and an erasable highlighter on the other. So rather than erase by friction like the Frixion ones, these are just like a normal highlighter only with a white/clear end as well. Just make sure you give it a minute for the highlighter to fully disappear.
They erase better when you let the colored highlighter ink ‘set’ for a few seconds and then erase.
These are the ‘inkiest’ out of the 3 highlighter brands and sometimes the ink leaks… But the colors are nice and bright so I still recommend them.
They come in pink, orange and yellow.
Update: The ink on the Typo highlighters only lasted 6 months so I no longer recommend them.
Smiggle Erasable
These are almost identical to the Typo erasable highlighters only they come in more colors. They’re quite pricey at $3.50 each and are only available individually. They come in: pink, purple, green and yellow.
Smiggle also have a ‘stax on’ highlighter. I initially though it was pricey at $6.95 but it does come with 5 different colors including a pretty teal color that is hard to find with highlighters! The highlighter stack is quite long (11 inches) – too big to take with for on the go planning.
Ooly Do-Overs
Highlighter on one end, correction / white out on the other end. The white tip erases faster than the Frixion, and if the paper you’re writing on is thin, it won’t tear or leave an indent.
Which highlighters are my favorite for planning?
I like the Frixion Erasable and the Ooly Do-Overs.
The Frixion erasbale can be purchased individually if you’ve never tried erasable highlighters.
