If you’ve read some of my reviews of dot grid notebooks for bullet journaling you’ll know I have a strong dislike for boring black covers! Most people might not care what color the cover is but if i’m going to be looking at it for a year or however long the notebook lasts, I want it to be pretty.
These are some companies that have dot grid notebooks in cover colors other than black – this post is a list of companies that (I think) have the widest range of colored covers.
Just know that it’s great to have a colored cover but I personally still think the quality of the paper inside the notebook is just as (if not more) important. I prefer bright white inside paper that’s not prone to ghosting or bleed through. So for this reason, in this post I’m mentioning cover colors but also paper quality.

In no particular order…
1. Leuchtturm 1917
You’ve probably already heard of the Leuchtturm usually dubbed the ‘original bullet journal notebook’ this comes in the biggest range of rainbow colors!
You can find these in almost every stationery store across Europe and on Amazon but are a little harder to find here in Australia (try Dymocks).
They come in hardcover and softcover versions so if you’re buying online make sure you check.

Despite how popular these notebooks are, the paper is quite thin:
2. Clever Fox
Their original dotted notebook comes in these cover colors: Rose gold, turquoise, lavender, purple, deep purple, hot pink, light pink, sky blue, royal blue, green (they call it neon yellow) and of course… black.
The Dotted journal 2.0 version (which I did a review of here) comes in less colors but there’s red and mint (they call it light turqouise).
The company that owns the Clever Fox dotted notebook has expanded into a few different planners over the past couple of years. They’re also the owner of these planners: Go Girl, Puffin Planner and the Legend Planner (I’ll be posting reviews for all of these planners soon), all of which have a variety of cover colors to choose from too.
The paper in all of the Clever Fox notebooks and planners is good – bright white with only minor ghosting for marker pens and stamps.

3. Dingbats
Not only does this notebook come in different cover colors (and page sizes), the paper is the smoothest and nicest to write on that I’ve come across.
The notebook I purchased is from their Wildlife Collection (which has more page sizes and color covers than their Earth collection). However, the earth collection has numbered pages, index, key, future log i.e. is designed for bullet journaling. If I were to purchase again I’d choose one of the Earth collections notebooks (I was distracted by the purple cover….) This page from their site has a good comparison.
Cover colors available: purple, dark blue, red, grey, orange, green, yellow, light blue, brown, white and of course… black.
There was light ghosting on the back of the page – not terrible but just enough to be noticeable.

4. Erin Condren
Sewn bound: Purple, rose gold, silver, turquoise, grey and various colorful patterns.
There are much more options for their coil bound notebooks where you can choose dotted inside pages.
For all the hype Erin Condren created about the improved Mohawk paper… it’s not that great:
Everything had light ghosting – more for the highlighters than the pens.

5. Minimalism Art
A cheap notebook that’s prone to ghosting but good if you want a notebook for brain dumping or drafting bullet journal layouts.
Cover colors available: blue, dark green, red, yellow, pink, orange, green and of course… black.
I have the blue version. See my review in this post.
You can find this notebook on Amazon (affiliate link).
6. Modena
If you’re in Australia and don’t want to buy something online or are looking for your first bullet journal, Modena has some nice cover colors.
Just note that the paper is thin (only 70 GSM) so is very prone to ghosting.

7. Custom notebooks
There are more and more brands offering custom notebooks nowadays. These are my favorite:
Agendio – build your dream notebook from scratch down to the size of the dot grid spacing. There are multiple cover options to choose from, but I do think they could be improved with more variety or the option to change the pattern’s colors.
The paper is bright white but prone to ghosting.

Luxe Gift Co (previously called Letter Love Designs) has are a few pattern covers to choose from which is why I’m including it on this list (most dot grid notebooks are just a solid color cover).
Sadly the paper is prone to ghosting:
