How to make a 1, 2 or 3 letter monogram in Microsoft Word (video tutorial)

I love monograms! I use them whenever I want to personalise something – to me they look nicer than having your name printed on a something (whether it be a notebook cover, phone case, address label etc.) and are more unique. Rachael is a common name but the monogram initials RWJ are much less common!. While I tend to make monograms in Photoshop, if you don’t have Photoshop you can also make them easily in Microsoft Word.

Monogram Fonts

Choose simple block style fonts such as:

  • Times New Roman
  • Rockwell
  • Trajan Pro

You want to choose fonts that add a bit of a swish or are thicker on the ends of the letters. I.e avoid fonts like Calibri.

Monogram Letters Order

For tips on monogram convention, see this post: monogram etiquette

3 letter monograms

Typically in this order: first letter of your first name (in lowercase), first letter of your last name (in uppercase), first letter of your middle name (in lowercase) so if your name was Megan Emily Smith your monogram would be mSe

2 letter monograms

Typically include only your first and last name. First letter of your first name and first letter of your last name. So if your name was Megan Smith your 2 letter monogram would be MS. I like to put a dot between the letters so it would look like: M.S.

If you want your monogram to look more aesthetically pleasing you can always change the order of the letters.

1 Letter Monograms

I typically do the first letter of my first name but you could also do the first letter of your last name.

Things you can make with a monogram

While I showed how to make monograms in word, I use the same process in Photoshop to make monograms. Here are some things I’ve made using monograms over the years:

1. DIY Planner Cover

The rainbow stripe cover in the photo below is a free printable I shared in this post (along with a tutorial on how to add it to your planner)

I also love using monograms for notebook covers (these were made using printable binder covers from my shop)

Monogram labels are also great for Hershey’s Kisses stickers for a wedding, anniversary or birthday!

4. Monogram tray liner

I made this using a similar method as the desktop screensaver tutorial (but I used Photoshop instead). I keep this tray on my beside table to corral all those random things like tissue boxes, nail scissors, hand cream etc.

I also use 2 in my bathroom: 1 for cleansers and another for makeup!

The tray is from Poppin and comes in ton of pretty colors.

6. Labels

  • Address labels
  • A label for your planner cover, binder, school notebook etc. (sticking it over the top of gift wrap or printed digital paper looks really nice!)
  • I also like to add monogram labels to my many pen cups!
